404 Fifth Avenue, an application for façade renovation and building entrance modifications.

At the regularly scheduled monthly Community Board Five meeting on Thursday, November 10, 2022, the following resolution passed with a vote of 37 in favor; 0 opposed; 1 abstaining:

WHEREAS, 404 Fifth Avenue, also known as the Stewart & Company Building, is an eight-story store and loft building designed by Warren & Wetmore at the corner of West 37th Street; and

WHEREAS, The upper portion of the steel-framed building is made of terracotta with large, tripartite windows and the lower portion is made of metal framing and masonry with vertical pilasters; and

WHEREAS, The 1914 building reflects the unusual combination of diverse influences such as the 18th century British Neo-Classical movement and the late 19th century Chicago School of Architecture style; and

WHEREAS, The applicant seeks to beautify and renovate the lower portion of the building and storefronts, removing the non-original stucco to restore the historical context and continuing the design of a previously approved application; and

WHEREAS, The applicant will concentrate on the first three bays nearest Fifth Avenue and replacement of a door along the West 37th Street side of the building; and

WHEREAS, A frosted-glass transom and accompanying framed lights will be continued across the Fifth Avenue façade, providing light into the retail spaces below; and

WHEREAS, A decorative rope design will be extended vertically along the northeast corner of the building with materials to match historic conditions; and

WHEREAS, A new main entrance is proposed for installation for the retail space along the center of the Fifth Avenue façade as well as set of double doors to replace the single door near the midpoint of the façade on West 37th Street; and

WHEREAS, The doors will feature black aluminum cladding and framing along the street level to match the previously renovated doorway; and

WHEREAS, The glass along the retail storefronts will replicate the original concept, matching the size of the windows above to maintain consistency; and

WHEREAS, The applicant presented a thorough proposal to renovate the building, seeking an aesthetically cohesive façade through the extension of historic design choices with harmonious and contextual renovations and as well, modifying the entrance to match examples around the neighborhood; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, Community Board Five recommends approval of the application for façade renovation and building entrance modifications at 404 Fifth Avenue.
