1 Union Square West (at 14th St), application to replace the front door of the building.

At the regularly scheduled monthly Community Board Five meeting on Thursday, May 13, 2021, the following resolution passed with a vote of 32 in favor; 0 opposed; 1 abstaining:

WHEREAS, 1 Union Square West, aka the Lincoln Building ("Applicant"), is located at the southeast corner of Union Square West and East 14th Street; and

WHEREAS, This 9-story Romanesque Revival style skyscraper was designed in 1887 by New York architect Robert Henderson Robertson (1849-1919) and illustrates an important early phase of the development of high-rise architecture in New York City; and

WHEREAS, The Union Square West elevation of the building is divided into four bays, the northernmost of which is the main entrance to the upper floor offices ("Entrance"); and

WHEREAS, The Applicant is proposing to modify the Entrance to return it to its original design; and

WHEREAS, The modifications will include removing the existing non-historical aluminum transom, glass door, frame and pull and installing new glass and dark bronze elements based on the original design; and

WHEREAS, The modifications will include replacing the existing 7-foot glass doors with new glass doors that are 9’,6” based on the original design; and

WHEREAS, The modifications will include reducing the transom size from the existing 5’,5” height to 3’, 10” based on the original design, installing new decorative columns above the doorway arch, and installing carved winged monsters (griffins) that originally sat above the frieze portion of the Entrance; and

WHEREAS, Community Board Five commends the applicant for submitting a proposal that is appropriate for the building and restores the Entrance to its original design. 

RESOLVED, Community Board Five recommends approval of the application for 1 Union Square West to modify the Entrance to the upper floor offices to restore the original design.
