Newsstand application (2240-2018 ANWS) at the NWC of Park Avenue and East 47th Street
WHEREAS, The applicant seeks a permit to install and operate a newsstand on the NWC of Park Avenue and East 47th Street; and
WHEREAS, The proposed newsstand would be located in a heavily congested area and create numerous obstructions; and
WHEREAS, The proposed newsstand would create an unnecessary burden on pedestrian flow; and
WHEREAS, Metro-North Railroad submitted written opposition to the application citing potential structural issues on the sidewalk where the proposed newsstand would be located and the potential effect on Metro-North facilities located directly below the sidewalk; and
WHEREAS, A previous application for a newsstand in this location was denied by Community Board Five in 2000; and
WHEREAS, The applicant acknowledged the need to attend the public hearing and post notification in the community, but they did neither; therefore, be it
RESOLVED, Community Board Five recommends denial of the application to install a newsstand at the Northwest corner of Park Avenue and East 47th Street; and be it further
RESOLVED, Recognizing that the cost of applying for a newsstand is very high for small business owners and operators, Community Board Five continues to request that DCA refund the fee for any application that is denied.
