WHEREAS, The Hotel Seville, now the James New York, was built in 1901-04 with addition in 1906-07, was designed by Harry Allan Jacobs in Beaux Arts style; and

WHEREAS, The property is located at 22 East 29th Street; and

WHEREAS, The Hotel Seville is an elegant early 20th-century Beaux-Arts style hotel, prominently located at the corner of Madison Avenue and East 29th Street north of Madison Square; and

WHEREAS, Dominant decorative features include a highly ornamented base and crown; sculptural limestone accents; decorative curved metal window bays; and an ornate cornice supported by large console brackets; and

WHEREAS, The Landmarks Preservation Commission calendared the building in December 2017 and held a hearing in February of 2018 indicating the building holds strong merits for landmark designation; and

WHEREAS, The building is located within the Madison Square North proposed Historic District Expansion that Community Board Five supports; therefore be it

RESOLVED, Community Board Five recommends support of the designation of the Seville as individual landmark; and further be it

RESOLVED, Community Board Five urges the Landmarks Preservation Commission to urgently consider the Madison Square North Historic District Expansion.
