Application by local neighborhood association to replace a bus stop on 5th Avenue between 55th and 54th Streets

WHEREAS, The Applicant proposes the installation of a bus stop on 5th Ave. between 55th and 54th Sts. to replace recently removed local bus stops; and

WHEREAS, In 2016 the United States elected Donald Trump as President; and

WHEREAS, The President maintains a private residence on 721 5th Ave., on the northeast corner of 57th St.; and

WHEREAS, The New York Police Department (NYPD) was tasked with maintaining certain security measures to protect the President’s residence; and

WHEREAS, The NYPD required the removal of certain bus stop location on 5th Ave. in relation to their proximity to Trump Tower; and

WHEREAS, The removal of these stops left an 8 block gap in local Manhattan bus service on 5th Avenue, creating an undue burden on local residents and businesses, as well as tourists and commuters; and

WHEREAS, The stops between 60th street and 52nd street now serve only commuter bus traffic; and

WHEREAS, Several bus stops currently exist in locations closer to Trump Tower than the proposed stop; and

WHEREAS, The location of the proposed stop would take advantage of a traffic free space that currently serves only infrequent commuter stops; and

WHEREAS, The proposed space already has a designated bus shelter; and

WHEREAS, The proposed space has room to accommodate local Manhattan lines numbered 1,2, 3, and 4; and

WHEREAS, There is tremendous support for this bus stop in the local community; and

WHEREAS, There were no objections to said proposal; therefore be it

RESOLVED, Community Board Five recommends approval of the application to install a local bus stop on 5th Avenue between 55th and 54th Streets.
