Application from Feedback Organization for “Feeding the 5000,” a cultural event in the North Plaza of Union Square Park on Tuesday, May 3rd, 2016 from 11:00am until 4:00pm

WHEREAS, The Feedback Organization ("Applicant") is proposing "Feeding the 5000," a cultural event in the North Plaza of Union Square Park on Tuesday, May 3rd, 2016 from 6:00am – 9:00pm; and

WHEREAS, The event will consist of eight activity tents and one stage, featuring presentations and complimentary food service to bring awareness to the problem of food waste globally, and is a festive event featuring free meals being served to the public from local farms, using parts of vegetables which would otherwise be considered waste, with the event having been held previously in London, Paris, Brussels, Amsterdam, Oakland, and Athens; and

WHEREAS, There will be demonstrations by chefs and other charitable organizations to bring awareness to the problem of food waste globally, and is co-organized by City Harvest and Grace Communications; and

WHEREAS, The event will begin loading at 6:00am and will load out at 9:00pm; and the expected attendance will be roughly 5,000 people; and will be staffed for sanitation by both volunteers and a professional sanitation company, both of whom will be clearly identified in uniform; and

WHEREAS, There will be nothing for sale at the event, and it will be free and open to the public; and

WHEREAS, There will be onsite security provided by the organizer; and

WHEREAS, Amplified sound will be limited to microphone usage for demonstrations and soft background music on small, short-throw speakers to restrict the throw of the sound as much as possible; and

WHEREAS, Community Board Five believes that this event is truly cultural in scope and provides a great benefit to the community by bringing awareness to a global cause; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, Community Board Five recommends approval of the application from Feedback Organization for "Feeding the 5000," a cultural event in the North Plaza of Union Square Park on Tuesday, May 3rd, 2016 from 11:00am until 4:00pm.
