Applications from Central Park Conservancy for the reconstruction of the Wild West Playground, located near 93rd Street and Central Park West, and the renovation of Adventure Playground, located near 67th Street and Central Park West

At the regularly scheduled monthly meeting of Community Board Five on Thursday, May 09, 2013, the following resolution passed with a unanimous vote of 34 in favor; 0 opposed; 1 abstaining:

WHEREAS, The Central Park Conservancy ("Applicant") has submitted applications for the reconstruction of the Wild West Playground, located near 93rd Street and Central Park West, and the renovation of Adventure Playground, located near 67th Street and Central Park West; and

WHEREAS, The projects are part of the Applicant's plan to raise each of Central Park's playgrounds to a standard of excellence as outlined in their master plan, Plan for Play: A Framework for Rebuilding and Managing Central Park's Playgrounds; and

WHEREAS, Playgrounds were built on these sites in the 1930s under the tenure of Robert Moses, but the current designs were by Richard Dattner, who designed several other playgrounds in Central Park, with Adventure Playground built in 1966 and renovated in 1996, and Wild West Playground built in 1988; and

WHEREAS, The equipment in the playgrounds is aging, and many features are worn and outdated, and the playgrounds are used heavily; and

WHEREAS, The goals of the projects are to improve the relationship of the playground to Central Park by addressing site lines, circulation and landscape; to restore the playgrounds within the framework of the existing design,  and to enhance and upgrade the playground experience by users between the ages of two and twelve; and

WHEREAS, Landscaping will be improved, including the establishment of enlarged planting margins between the playgrounds and the Park; water features will be restored and made universally accessible, rubber safety surfacing will replace problematic areas of concrete, and the paths leading to the playgrounds will be rebuilt and made ADA-compliant and accessible; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, Community Board Five recommends approval of the applications from Central Park Conservancy for the reconstruction of the Wild West Playground, located near 93rd Street and Central Park West, and the renovation of Adventure Playground, located near 67th Street and Central Park West.
