Proposal by the Department of Transportation (DOT) to Create Crosstown Bicycle Routes on 16th Street and 15th Streets

At the monthly meeting of Community Board Five on Thursday, April 11, 2013, the Board passed the following resolution with a vote of 41 in favor, 1 opposed, 1 abstaining:

WHEREAS, Community Board Five believes safety issues are of paramount importance with transit planning; and

WHEREAS, Bike share will bring thousands of new cyclists through the lower portion of Community Board Five, with nearly 200 bike share docks at Union Square; and

WHEREAS, Bike routes provide a logical way to organize street traffic; and

WHEREAS, The DOT finds that the proposed 15th / 16th Street Crosstown Bicycle Routes between Union Square West and the Hudson River Greenway would increase safety for all types of roadway users; therefore be it

RESOLVED, Community Board Five supports the installation of shared lane signs on 15th and 16th streets between 6th Avenue and Union Square West; and be it further

RESOLVED, Community Board Five asks the DOT to look at the feasibility of installing protected (parking or non-parking) bike routes on one westward bound street (15th or 17th Streets) and one eastward bound stretch (16th or 18th) between Broadway/Union Square West and the Hudson River Greenway.
