Proposed redistricting by the NYS State Legislature

WHEREAS, All states must engage in a redistricting process for legislative seats every decade in response to demographic shifts as measured by the United States Census; and 

WHEREAS, The proposed LATFOR (NY State Legislative Task Force on Demographic Research and Apportionment) districts are highly gerrymandered and would unnecessarily break up electoral districts within neighborhoods; and

WHEREAS, the proposed LATFOR districts would result in NYC senate seats with greater populations per district than most upstate districts, thus diluting the vote of a NYC resident relative to that of an upstate resident and violating principles of one-person one-vote; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, Community Board Five strongly urges Governor Cuomo keep his pledge to veto partisan redistricting maps and calls for an independent redistricting of NY legislative seats for the 2012 election cycle. 

The above resolution passed by a vote of 31 in favor; 0 opposed; 1 abstaining.
