Historical Photo of the Week (April 16, 2018): The Dewey Arch

The Dewey Arch was temporarily erected in Madison Square Park to celebrate Admiral George Dewey's 1898 victory in the Battle of Manila Bay in the Philippines during the Spanish-American War.

The arch stood until 1900, when efforts to make the arch permanent faltered amid anti-war sentiment. Read more about the park's arches here.
